Most people walk up and down their entrance walkway a few
times a day. Sometimes, they consider putting a plant out front or planting a
shrub. Other times, they really get creative and start designing a more
beautiful walkway. What might cross their mind is the desire to reflect their
love of life expressed in colors, textures and ornamental plants and flowers. A
pathway is an exciting way to showcase a wide range of your interests and your
style.
There are so many ways to approach opening up your
creativity and not getting bogged down with details or rationalizing everything
all along the way. By pausing long enough to catch up with your current style
and loosen up a little bit, you can really see what gets you humming.
Repeatedly, people get overtaken with commercials, ads, articles with beautiful
pictures that make it all seem so unattainable. There are a few things that can help you make your
walkway feel unique and fabulous.
What shape will your
walkway be
Shaping your walkway is the first aspect of designing your
walkway to consider. Basically, think about what kind of atmosphere you want to
create. If you’re going for a more formal style, most formal gardens are
straight. An informal path is likely to be curved to imply a little mystery
around the bend. Try to consider who will be using the pathway and how much
traffic you expect. Make sure that it’s the correct width. One thing to avoid is making any awkward
spaces caused as a result of the path. Consider the climate where you live.
What kind of material
will you use
There are a myriad of materials available for you to feel
like you are staying true to your intentions. Lay out your design. Consider
using firmer materials for heavy traffic walkways and loose gravel for less
heavily trodden paths.
While there is a large range to choose from, there are five
common materials. Crushed or pea stone gives a rustic feel, but you might not
like how easily it ends up inside and damaging interior floors. Pavers provide
a formal smooth finished look, and some homeowners find that it is difficult to
get them to look natural. Stamped concrete doesn’t leave gaps between stones like
pavers and you can create very natural looking or formal designs with different
patterns. Due to their beauty and natural look, natural stone is most
desirable. Brick can be either formal or whimsical depending on the pattern you
create.
Once you’ve chosen the shape and material, consider what
kinds of plants and flowers you might set along your path, if any.
