Many people get intimidated about decorating their walls,
because they might be afraid of what tradition they are breaking. Often, we
learn taste from our families. Sometimes that means that if they were very
frugal, it certainly showed in where they put their priorities. Maybe your
mother or father called it a waste of time to consider what types of frames to
put on your walls, because what mattered was the art or picture in the frame.
Now that was them and then, and here we are with you and now. You shouldn’t put
aside your own search for style for fear of breaking with tradition. You can
always incorporate some of the traditions in tasteful ways that match your own
unique decorating choices. When you look at your walls, you should imagine what
it is you think will reflect your style.
Picking frames you
like
Picking the frames you like for that blank wall in front of
you may be duped from the start if you have a hard time making a decision
because you love exploring ALL the options. Often we like exploring all the
options for far longer than is necessary. Sure the room might look good with
shadowbox frames or metal frames. It’s also possible that the wall will bring
out some beautiful tones from wood finished frames or traditional ornate frames
coordinated to your furniture will make all the difference. However, before you
get too far ahead of yourself and sink your ship before it sails because you’ve
lost direction, ask yourself what kind of frames you’ve always wanted on that
wall. When I did that, I felt liberated. For one wall, I chose whimsical
unfinished frames that I could paint any color my soul desired. For another
wall, I chose repurposed barn wood frames because I like the look and feel and
I like repurposing when it can look great in its second life.
Picking frames that
match your photos or match each other
Many people just throw something on the wall because they
don’t feel like they want to take away from the piece. By doing it this way,
they are ignoring two very important possibilities that will soothe their eyes.
First, they forget to open up to the possibility that a preferred frame can
enhance the picture or painting. Second, they forget that if they picked the
picture or artwork, because something about it reflects their interests and
passions, then a preferred frame will provide a well thought out outline to get
the attention it deserves.
Now your framed piece can reflect your preferences and stand
out.
